This study looks at the historical development of the offices of Vicar General and Episcopal Vicar.
followed by an explanation of their appointment, required qualifications, scope of their powers and
cessation of offices. It also emphasises the importance of ecclesiastical offices as a juridical institution
for the public function of the Church and how these offices contribute to the pastoral care in the
particular church under the governance of the diocesan bishop. Cc. 475–481 are examined in depth in
in order to properly understand the origin and significance of the offices of the Vicar General and Episcopal
Vicars. Thus, an attempt is made to decipher the importance of these offices from a historical, juridical, and pastoral point of view.
