Description:
Religion is the word we use for the relationship between God and the believer or devotee.
It is the symbolic way in which humans relate themselves with their creator. But in many
cases it becomes only a social institution which the average believer becomes part of
without any serious involvement or consciousness about it results. Religion is part of the
many things which the society approves and encourages as means of a settled and peaceful
existence. But today the situation is rapidly changing. What were tolerated in the past are
being questioned by the thinking man as useless and even dangerous for his forward
march in search ofmeaning. In this context, the traditional religions with their ritualoriented practices are being set aside. Today there is a cry for direct relationship with God.
The symbolic ways are to be substituted by direct experience of God. It is in this context
that mysticism becomes relevant for the modern man. That justifies this study on
mysticism.
