This document from the Congregation for the Clergy is a call to rediscover the indispensible
value of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and of Spiritual direction, as the vital tools
needed for all Christians to answer the call to holiness. Offering practical advice, as well as
a measured overview of these two weapons in the battle for a life modeled on Christ, the
bearer of God’s mercy, reconciliation is treated with great urgency, as a ministry of mercy
and a journey of conversion, while spiritual direction is shown to be walking alongside all
vocations, to help in ongoing discernment of what God wants from us. Confessors and
penitents are exhorted to ‘let Christ be formed in you’.
